Johnston Canyon

Region: Rockies · Updated

Catwalks through a limestone canyon to waterfalls and the Ink Pots.

About Johnston Canyon

Johnston Creek has cut a narrow limestone canyon with waterfalls, tunnels and pools. Catwalks bolted to the canyon walls lead to the Lower and Upper Falls, and the trail continues to the Ink Pots, a group of blue-green spring-fed pools in a meadow. In winter the frozen falls draw ice-walkers and ice climbers.

A brief history

In 2018 some informal trails near the falls were closed to help protect a small nesting population of black swifts, a reminder of how busy places and wildlife have to share space.

RV tips

  • It's on the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A) between Banff and Lake Louise. Check Parks Canada for seasonal travel restrictions on the parkway.
  • The parking lot fills fast. Arrive early or late in the day.
  • Ice cleats are useful from late fall to spring.

Before you go: Hours, road conditions, campground availability, passes and fire bans change. Check the official source below, 511 Alberta and Alberta Fire Bans before you travel. National parks need a Parks Canada pass, and Kananaskis needs a Conservation Pass.
