Crowsnest Pass
Historic coal-mining towns strung along Highway 3 in the southern Rockies.
About Crowsnest Pass
The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass links former mining communities such as Blairmore, Coleman, Bellevue, Hillcrest and Frank, with mountain scenery, fishing and hiking. Historic sites include the Leitch Collieries and the Bellevue Mine underground tour.
A brief history
Coal mining built these towns, and also brought tragedy. In 1914 the Hillcrest mine disaster killed 189 people, one of the worst mining disasters in Canadian history. The Frank Slide of 1903 happened in the same valley.
RV tips
- Highway 3 is the main route to southern BC. Expect transport trucks and strong westerly winds.
- There are several campgrounds in and around the pass.
- Pair with Castle Provincial Park and Waterton for a southwest loop.
