A preserved historic ranch on the Cowboy Trail near Longview.

About Bar U Ranch National Historic Site

Bar U Ranch tells the story of Canada's ranching industry through original ranch buildings, costumed interpreters and wide foothills views. It's a natural stop on a drive along Highway 22, the Cowboy Trail.

A brief history

The ranch was founded by Fred Stimson, whose North West Cattle Company grazed cattle on open range from 1881. From 1902 the ranch was run by George Lane, one of the "Big Four" backers of the first Calgary Stampede, and from 1927 to 1950 it was part of Patrick Burns's ranching empire. Parks Canada bought the central remnant in 1991 and opened it to the public in 1995.

RV tips
